SNMP Monitoring Questions

I have some questions on how to monitor switches via SNMP in Zabbix. I come from Cacti where I am most accustomed to adding a host with the SNMP login information and it walking the OIDs for interfaces and allowing me to select what I want to monitor. In Zabbix, if I understand this correctly, I

1. Create a host (the switch)
2. I create an item (from an OID, in my case the inOctets on port1)
3. Create a graph
4. Add the item to the graph

Following these steps I get a graph with nothing displayed, yet cacti monitors the device without issue. Can anyone assist?

Do you see anything under Monitoring -> Latest Data?

Anything in zabbix_server.log?

Did you configure --with-net-snmp?

Cacti can monitor this device suggests that snmp is enabled on the device, but is IP of Zabbix allowed to access the device?

Is the snmp community name the same in zabbix item and device?
