Upgrade from 1.6 to 1.8

Hi,
What is the best way to upgrade zabbix when you have proxies. We have 1 zabbix server and 2 zabbix proxies. They are at 1.6.7 Documentation says that 1.6 proxies can not talk with 1.8. Do we upgrade proxies first and then server? We are trying not to lose data while upgrade is happening but must know if data will be lost during this time.

All the zabbix machines are at 1.6.8. It would be nice to know if 1.8 proxies can talk to 1.6 server. I guess I will have to experiment. Thank you for your reply.
