Hi, I just would like to start this thread discussion if I may:
Because zabbix is monitoring tools first of all, are there any chances that new areas would be implemented one day?
1) Inventoring.
It exists in zabbix, but how many of you use it?
Great next step would be If zabbix agent could fill some of these automaticaly, like hostname, OS version, hardware specs, ethernet macs, ip addresses, dnses, software list etc.
Another idea here I would really like: increase maximum update interval from 1day(86400) to something bigger. Or event set update interval to once or when changed.
This would increase the inventoring potential of zabbix, I think, as extra stuff can be collected using UserParamaters, like
motherboard model (dmidecode can be used),
display model(WinAuditu.exe can be used in Win32)
and many other things can be colected as with 3d party tools or scripts that way.
Yes, that would be listed in Latest Data, but still, collected seldomly, it can count as inventoring
What do you think of that?
Meanwhile, how do you guys inventory your hosts now? We are growing everyday and I'm afraid that one day I would be lost
Extra problem here that we don't have one huge LAN, our hosts are geographically scattered.
(That's why I love zabbix proxies and zabbix active check)
2)Reporting is another domain that could be improved
The main thing here is that zabbix is capable of collecting lots and lots of information and fire many triggers. Thing is, I(and many would agree, I think) don't want to be interrupted or disctracted with sms or email containing some single warning in logfile, CPU being high for a bit and so on. But I DO want to know about them, just not the next second it happens. So what If those minor buzzes can be collected all together in one daily email report? Yes, I do believe you can see this info in Events of zabbix console.
However, you can only get there in dozen of clicks where in other hand your scheduled daily report pops to your mailbox automatically, you need to read it and thats all.
The mailbox is that what you check all the time. You can't miss whats going on zabbix this way, minor or major. And you don't need to click your way through to see whats up today. Do you agree?
Also, including graphs in mail messages would be great idea, so again, I can see hardware utilization for every 1,7,30days even its not critical - I won't miss it.
Meanwhile, I use JasperReports to create daily mail reports. They contain all critical errros in eventlogs during the past day so I can examing them all at once. I'm testing splunk also in a free time.
And how do you create reports?
3) and Ticketing is completely different thing I agree, the only thing I dream of is that I could attach all my issues or tickets to hosts or hosts group. This way I wouldn't need to create all my hosts two times in Zabbix and Ticketing system and also would be able to see all my Latest Data, Info and Issues on one page. Yes, I'm really all-in-one fan.
Currently, we keep track of our tickets using completely diffent web-hosted app. And also I hate it
What application do you use for Ticketing and Knowledge base?
Please share opinions
