    Active checks???

    Hi,

I have several servers in my network and I test them with (I think) passive checks.

Now I wont to test a server behind a router trough active checks, because server to agent is not possible.

I have browse the manual and the forum, and it not clear for me, how to configure it.

Is active checks a standard feature of the zabbix_agentd?
How do I configure it? (server and agent)
How do I enable active checks?
How do I disable passive checks?

I now I ask every thing, but I can’t get a clear view of it.

    Thanks for your help,
    Dominic

Active checks are quite simple to enable.

My personal preference is to export the appropriate template (example - Template Windows) and rename it to Template Windows Active, then re-import it. That will make it available for any hosts you want to have active items for and leave the original template as passive checks.

After the above step, go to the newly created template: Configuration --> Items then use the dropdown menus at the top right to select "Templates" and "Template_Windows_Active".

From there, put a checkmark in the "Description" box at the top left. That will put a checkmark next to each item in the template.

Next step is to scroll all the way down and on the buttons across the bottom, click on the last one "Mass Update".

On the next screen, put a checkmark for the first item "Type" and then select Zabbix Agent (Active) from the dropdown list. Then at the bottom of that screen, click on "update".

You have now made all the items for that template "Active check" items.

The only thing you need to do on the host to make it work, is to make sure that the zabbix_agentd.conf file has the field "Hostname=<Name As In Zabbix>. If you are adding this field or changing it, be sure to restart the agent. The important thing here is to make sure the Hostname is exactly as you have it entered in the Zabbix frontend, including caps/lower case.

If it is not an exact match, Zabbix won't pick up that host.

Make sure that you un-link the passive check template and link the newly created active check template to the host.

That's it for setting up active checks. There may be more steps necessary because you are behind a firewall, but I cannot help you with that.
