Problems with New install 1.8

I have just installed zabbix 1.8 on ubuntu 9.10 x64 with mysql - the problem is that i am having is that i have test host configured with a generic template with ping and i am not getting any results - i am currently using 1.6.6 but decided to perform a fresh install

I did check sql and the hostid is in the host table

for ping items to work you must have fping correctly setup setuid root for zabbix user. of course, make sure correct version of zabbix_server is running
