Just for the record: It's 2021 now and there's https://github.com/cloudflare/cfssl/releases, especially their "certinfo" tool. Here's a nice writeup of what it does, basically it returns all certificate info as a JSON structure. And it's written in Go, so there's only one statically linked binary. Perfect for Zabbix.

One of the features on the Zabbix 6.0 roadmap is built-in certificate expiration checking. Maybe they'll use this tool, maybe not, but certificate expiration checking is apparently going to be "baked in" to the product soon.

I already celebrated the 10-year anniversary of my certexpire script, which already has discovered many expired certificates.
Even at this moment it detects a Letsencrypt certificate not getting renewed on 3CX which is supposed to be fully automatic.
