Disabling trigger AND item, or only item?

Is it recommended to disable trigger AND item if I don't want to check this item? Up to now I only disabled an item if I don't want it. Is the performance of zabbix better if the associated trigger is disabled, too?

If the Item is disabled, then the Trigger is also disabled because it is not connected to an enabled item - i.e that trigger can never fire.

It probably doesn't matter one way or the other whether you choose to disable the Trigger as well as the Item. However, I usually disable the Triggers as well because 6 or 12 months later when I need to enable that Item again I don't want any *surprise* alerts due to a long-forgotten, badly written Trigger expression.
