New Items: Key parameter for SNMP agent

Hello all,

I am just wondering what exactly is the key parameter when configuring a new SNMPv1/2 agent type item.

Must I select one from the pre-existing list? Can I create new ones? Is there a best practice?

I just can't figure out their use. Can someone please enlighten me?

Aside from their use in triggers...

More specifically, I was wondering if the key can be used outside of triggers...
