Supressing alerts based on % of hosts dropping offline

Last night I had an issue where for about an hour or two all of my hosts kept getting reported offline and than immediately online. Unfortunately this generated over a thousand emails and woke up a number of people in the middle of the night. It was not a connection issue either as the zabbix server itself kept getting reported offline. I don't know what the cause was but I do know that I'd like a way to disable alerts if 50% or more of the hosts all drop offline at the same time to prevent alert flooding and false alerts.

Anyone have any idea if this is possible?

not directly. i'd suggest making your checks more robust by checking last n responses, and only firing an alarm if they all are reporting a problem
