Right off the bat, I suspect that the reason the spam continued was that you had a bunch of alerts queued up. Another possibility is that by deleting the trigger while it was in an alert state, left the alert state active.
A suggestion for setting up the alerts in the future, set your repeat delay to no less and 300 seconds. Another thing to help reduce the spam. When you create the alert, you have a choice of sending the alert to a single user or a group, use the group option. Next, make sure that there is no media defined for the the group itself, and that media is only defined for the individual users within the group.
