    Newbie question

I am primarily a Windows user with very little linux exposure. I downloaded the Zabbix ISO file 1.8.2 and was expecting to be able to run Zabbix from the Suse Linux CD that was created, but it doesn't seem like it is ready for use.

Is there a step by step guide that tells you how to setup a minimum installation of Zabbix?

    Thanks

      Hi,

I downloaded the CD ISO file from http://www.zabbix.com/download.php

      I choose Zabbix 1.8.2 x86

I log in to linux "user: root password: zabbix", but I don't know what to do after.

There is nothing in the bin directory.
      /etc/zabbix contains two configuration files.
      /etc/X11 contains a folder xdm and a file xorg.conf.testdrive

From what you are telling me, the software is runnable directly from the CD. Did I understand correctly? Is that what you refer to as the "appliance"?

      Thanks

yes, it should have zabbix server & frontend running - the server part.
you should point your browser at the ip the appliance received, and you should be greeted by the zabbix frontend.

Thanks. It works. I wonder if it is possible to save the configuration changes that are done on the web somewhere since i am running off a CD.

hmm. that's a good question... you could use xml export, but that only covers hosts/map/screens currently.
for a full configuration dump you could use create_data_sql.sh script from svn, but that's a bit complicated.
you could also create a full db copy with mysqldump, which would include gathered data and runtime data as well.

so there's no perfect solution yet - maybe that's for the future versions

For example, there is an administrative wizard that is trying to save the result in /usr/share/zabbix/conf/zabbix.conf.php. Since the location is on the CD. I am not able to save. I am not able to bypass this step. It would've been nice to see the program at work without saving anything.

I assume it is possible to save the configuration on a USB key and load it again everytime I restart, but I am not sure how to do that.

Below is the message from the system
Please install configuration file manualy, or fix permissions on conf directory.

Press "Save configuration file" button, download configuration file and save it as
              "/usr/share/zabbix/conf/zabbix.conf.php"

              Thanks

actually, the configuration file should be there already. what does
                Code:
                ls -l /usr/share/zabbix/conf/
                show you ?

I noticed there are files in /etc/zabbix.

that's not ls -l - check permissions on zabbix.conf.php (basically that it can be accessed by the webserver)

looks good. and "config" directory they reside in ?

edit : ah, damn. if you copy configuration file, why are you running the wizard ? either allow webserver to write to that file, or just cancel the wizard.

I don't use the wizard anymore (Administration\Installation). Only the first time. My problem now is how to save the rest of the network settings (Configuration, monitoring, etc) (where definitions of my windows servers are and the services that I need zabbix to check) Would they be in the mysql files? I tried to copy the /var/lib/zabbix/mysql/mysql (I am getting this from memory because I am not at work today); when i restarted and copied those files back to their original location I still wasn't able to get the configurations I made.

in that case it is highly misleading that you didn't specify that (as far as i noticed, last problem was about 'Please install configuration file manualy, or fix permissions on conf directory.")

Sorry for the confusion. I still don't have the answer though.
