zabbix ping to monitor /reports graphs

Hi I need a tutorial to show me how to monitor Host via ICMP or ping.
I can't do SNMP to the hosts..

I would like this to reflect on dashboard sytem status..
Also have reports/ graph for Availability and response times..
Alerts for host down
e-mail reports daily.

How could i do this..?

Ubuntu 9.10 karmic.
zabbix 1.8.2
postgres SQl

I a total newb at zabbix, I see the documentation you are talking about, but where do i put this in zabbix?

How do I make a general template to use icmpping for a number of hosts.

I see someone advise to use template standalone.. I can;t seem to find it
