    Agentless Monitoring

Is there a way to monitor a server with no agent?
I have an AS400 i just want to make sure the server is up with a ping, but I dont really see a way to do this, am I just missing it?

You can monitor an agent-less server by snmp if you want to monitor lots of things.

But if you are happy with just a ping, you can do that with Simple checks. Have a look at the Template_Standalone. [you will need fping to do icmppings].

    Check this link: http://www.zabbix.com/documentation/1.8/manual/config/items#simple_checks

Disclaimer: All of the above is pure speculation.

Yes, it works fine. I'm monitoring several things on an as/400 just by using fping and snmp. With snmp I can look at bandwidth on each interface and cpu utilization, I'm not using agents anywhere on any of my boxes whether they are as/400, Windows or Linux.

Can I get any advice on setting up the trigger?

The standalone template has some good triggers but there isn't one for ping, and I am not really sure what to use in the trigger as none really make sense to me with what is returned on a ping.

I am not terribly worried about time as I am monitoring across long distances in some cases I just want to know if the reply was received.

I guess the question I have is update interval just sending a single ping, or is it sending multiple pings?

I could do a 1 reply in 30 seconds and that would work, but I wanted to make sure I understood how it handles this better.

The icmpping options changed in the newest version, you can set the size and number of pings among other things. I was playing with this last night, to use icmpping with no options you can select it from the list after you choose "simple checks". Pick icmpping then get rid of all the extra parameters after it and make it look like this:
          icmpping[, , , ,]

I tried it without spaces between the commas but it seems to want them. I'm doing this from memory and I've slept since then (but not enough!) but this should get you close. That will use all the default parameters and you can just use the settings in the trigger setup window to tell it how often to ping.

          Hope that helps!
