No rule to make target 'install'

I'm trying to install Zabbix on Ubuntu 10.04. The manual seems to leave a few things out, so I'm trying to use additional information found in the forums. I was able to create the database and run the configure command, but I get an error when I do "make install". The error is:

make: *** No rule to make target 'install'. Stop.

I have absolutely no idea what I've done wrong. Any ideas where to begin troubleshooting?

what directory are you in when you try to do the make? You need to be in the directory created when you untar the file you downloaded.

I was in the same directory as the configure command, zabbix-1.8.2. I ran the configure command and then immediately tried the make command.

I think the problem is that configure is not completing properly. I ran it again and it keeps saying that curl is missing. I've been going through Synaptic and installing practically everything with curl in the name and configure still keeps saying it can't find it. I just installed some more curl-related things and then I'll try it again.

Okay, I got through the curl section, but now it's complaining that it can't find net-snmp, which doesn't seem to be available from Synaptic. I installed snmp, but there is no net-snmp available that I can find.

However, I did see that zabbix is available from the repository, so I'm going to try simply installing it through Synaptic to see how it goes.

You need the snmp devel libraries... there used to be two snmp libraries, UCD and Net. It's likely your snmp library is net-snmp, thus you just need to find the devel library, the same is true for any other dependency you run into.

              Hi All,

I also faced same error. Seems make install doesn't work. I run it from location where I untar zabbix. I deploy Zabbix on SUSE.

              Please assist.

              Thanks.

              Nik

What steps have you taken up to that point? Also what do you mean by "make install doesn't work"? The error message would be useful here.

I'm going to take a stab in the dark and guess that "configure" was not run first.

An outline of the necesary steps are found in the documentation:
                http://www.zabbix.com/documentation/

Also what version of Zabbix are you trying to install?

                  Hi Nelson,

Thank you for your response. Sorry I am newbie with open source. Not familiar doing any compilation in Linux.

                  I run below steps:
                  1. Create zabbix database. - Success
                  2. Assign zabbix database to zabbix mysqluser. - Success
                  3. Create database schema; mysql.sql, data.sql, images_mysql.sql. - All Success
                  4. Run ./configure --enable-server --with-mysql --with-net-snmp --with-jabber --with-libcurl.

Got error on last line (MySQL library not found).

You require me to provide any other details?

                  Thank you for your help.

Nope that was the piece I was looking for. You need to install the mysql development libraries, mysql-devel, along with the development libraries for snmp, curl and jabber. You should be able to find them in yast.

                      Hi Nelson,

Noted, I will try it. Will revert to you the result. Thanks a lot.
