    What is the Zabbix URL?

I installed Zabbix from the Ubuntu repository but now I don't know what to do. The installation manual says, "Go to the Zabbix URL" but doesn't specify what that URL is. How am I supposed to know what it is? When I go to http://mymachinename, I get a message saying, "It works! This is the default web page for this server. The web server software is running but no content has been added yet."

Do I need to specific a particular URL? If so, what is it?

I've never used Ubuntu but my first guess is http://host/zabbix. Or go to the directory normally used for web files by your distro, or check the Apache config file for the documentroot.

That gets me to a completely blank page. I get no errors, but there literally is nothing on the page. I tried it in Chrome and Firefox.

This is turning out to be a horribly frustrating experience. The manual is not sufficient to install this application and the tips I'm finding in the forums are, while very helpful, still not complete.

Should I try another distro? I just picked Ubuntu because I was curious to see what the new release looked like and it appeared to be a supported distro. It seems that Zabbix installed properly from the repositories, but now I just need to figure out how to get to the GUI and configure it. I'd be more than happy to try another distro if I can get better results.

Which document were you reading? Yes the old PDF is frustrating to the new user, but Richlv has made some serious strides with the Wiki version of the manual. That documentation can be found here: http://www.zabbix.com/documentation

As for why it is not working with the distribution you have, you'll have to take that up with other Debian (and descendant) users. I'm a SuSE person and have found the install process pretty straight forward with OpenSuSE 11.x. The only trick if you will is to be sure you have the development packages installed before you start.

That is the documentation I was using. It assumes a lot about the person doing the installation. I know enough linux/unix to be able to enter commands and have some idea of what they're doing, but I'm not a linux admin nor am I a database admin. The installation guide assumes that I know a lot more about linux and databases and can have all sorts of things in place prior to beginning the installation. I had to find some other step-by-step guides in the forums to get as far as I got.

As far as I can tell, Zabbix is running, I just have no idea how to access the web interface and the manual seems to have left that part out. It just says, "Point your browser to the Zabbix URL", but doesn't say what that URL actually is.

Maybe I'll try the installation again with Suse. I have a Suse 10 CD right here. I'll install that and see if I get better results.

You are correct about the assumptions, part of that is due to the target audience. However that does not mean it's impossible for you, it might just require a little extra tenacity. Either way when you're done you'll be that much more skilled as a Linux admin. :-)

I would warn against SuSE 10 with 1.8.x of Zabbix. I don't think the PHP libraries are the correct ones. See if you can dig up the package maintainer for the Zabbix package you installed. That will likely be your best route for help, I think he lurks the forum too.

Do you have a distro that you'd recommend more than Ubuntu? I'm up for trying any of them. I'm tempted now to download one of the virtual images and just run it inside VirtualBox or something. Maybe that would be a bit easier.

I'm a SuSE fan and I know it works with OpenSuSE 11.2. However to do it you'll need some understanding of the LAMP stack to set things up.

Give the VM a shot, you might find it works better for you.

I'm trying to figure out how to get the VM working. I've got VirtualBox installed on ubuntu and I've downloaded the VM/Virtualbox package. I unzipped/untarred it, but I'm not able to import the file into Virtualbox. It's probably user error, but VirtualBox doesn't see either of the resulting files (a .vmx and a .vmdk file).

EDIT: I figured it out. I had to go into the Virtual Media Manager and add the .vmdk as a hard disk, then create a new virtual machine pointing to that hard disk.

Ugh.... This just isn't my lucky day. I can't even get the virtual machine to boot. It's not grabbing an IP address, so it's setting its address to 127.0.0.1. Then it prompts me to login, but I have no idea what the login credentials are. The manual says to point a browser at it, but I can't do that because it doesn't have an address. Grrrrrr....

                          Same problem

I have the same problem. I have Zabbix installed and running, but I also can't find the url. http://demo/~demo/queue.php doesn't make sense to me. I do not have a goey installed on the server computer, so I have to do something like this:

https://192.168.3.1/demo/~demo/queue.php, but it doesn't work. I used find to find the file queue.php, and it is in the installation directory only. Is this right?

Is there any help as to where the files should be and if everything is set up right?

The server needs zabbix_server running. Is zabbix_agentd also needed? There is no zabbix_proxy installed. Is there a file list or something to check that all is installed and in place?
