    Newbie questions

OK, I think I've my zabbix install working, and I've been through the Quick Start in the docs. At the moment I am figuring out how this works just by monitoring the ubuntu system it is installed on. Nothing external. Some questions:

    * I have a few alerts in my dashboard already. Apache and Inetd. Hello... I am using apache to access zabbix, aren't I? In any case, it's up and running some other sites I have on this server. Also inetd is running. Why the erroneous alerts?

    * I am trying to trigger a notifications. I have set up the media items for email (I'll worry about SMS later). I've set up a generic action, with no conditions. I've added an operation to send email to myself at my gmail account. I then shut down dovecot (imap & pop). Alerts show in the dashboard, but I get no email. In the Notifications tab it shows none to any users. What am I missing?

    Thanks

In your Item configuration, try changing proc.num[apache] to [httpd], and for [inetd] try [xinetd].

Thanks. I am more of a software developer than a systems admin, so any help is appreciated.

Changing it to "apache2" solved the web server alert.

I don't see an obvious solution to inetd, xinetd didn't help.

The user account that should be getting notifications looks OK. It was a "user" account, but I had it as a member of all groups. Just now I changed it to an "admin" account and tested it again, but still no notifications.

So I'm thinking it's an SMPT issue. Normally, I can't send through my server without a password on SSL, so it surprised me a bit that there weren't any authentication settings for the email media type. But, it's on the same server and "localhost" is in the network setting for postfix, so I think it should be OK(?).

What should I expect to see when in the notifications page? Should I be seeing something there even if the email notification is not successfully sent?

Not sure where you will find this on Zabbix 1.8.x, but in Zabbix 1.6.x under Administration -> Audit there is a dropdown box where you can choose AuditActions. This will show you any alerts sent and whether they were 'sent' or 'failed'.

Keep in mind that if zabbix is going to send an email from [email protected] then zabbix will need to have an established email account.

It is the same in 1.8

Only change is now there is a filter available to select recipient if you desire.
