Help how do I monitor servers? Quick Start needs help

    Newbie questions:
I got the Zabbix VM appliance up and running but can't figure out how to monitor two test servers that I have available? One server has the Zabbix Windows client installed and the other Windows SNMP Service native client installed. Can Zabbix even do full snmp windows monitoring without the client?

On the Zabbix appliance server how do you test if the remote servers port is open? Telnet or mmap is not installed on the server?

I don't mind reading is there an updated getting started guide help file that is updated with 1.8 information?

Also this Quick Start guide needs serious help!
    http://www.zabbix.com/documentation/...start/add_host
This guides pictures are almost a year old and the version looks like 1.1.x

Lots of questions there all in one post

Firstly, what platform do you have the Zabbix Server running on? This will go some way to helping you test the components of the zabbix deployment you may (or may not) have. For example, Zabbix can most certainly perform full SNMP monitoring of just about anything you point it at. So if you are using, say CentOS or similar, grab a package called 'SNMPWALK' and perform a walk on the destination. This will help in making sure the SNMP config and comms is ok, before adding Zabbix into the equation.

To monitor a windows server using the agent, all you should need is port 10050 open between the Zabbix Server and the Agent, and have an appropriate template or set of items setup for the Zabbix server to monitor.

When you first set Zabbix up, it has a series of default templates. One of these is a windows one, so make sure you have your comms sorted, make sure you are running compatible versions of the agent and server running, make sure the configuration files have all the correct settings like Server IP, client listening IP; if its set to 127.0.01, you may need to change it to an actual IP for the host. (These can be obtained from the manual).

So, short answer is, get the agent running correctly, add the host in the Zabbix console, apply the windows template and see what you get!!

There are a bunch of tools and extra keys/items you can test with (Like UserParameter and zabbix-get), but head down that path if the first fails for you.

    Cheers
