When you say "external" do you mean a device outside of your network? Like outside of your firewall? I use SNMP for a lot of things in my network but to do it outside of the firewall you're probably going to need a Zabbix box on the other network to do the checks then let the 2 Zabbix boxes talk to each other via an open firewall port on both sides (hopefully with encrypted data).

If you just need to monitor something on your network you can find the right syntax to set up the monitoring (oids, etc.) by using snmpwalk to see what information is available. I use snmp to monitor bandwidth and port status on lots of devices. You run snmpwalk against the device and it will tell you what is available and what the value is for each parameter.

    Hope that helps!
