    Noob trying to use(install) zabbix

Can someone direct me to the ubernoob forum please?
I was surfing the web for system management solutions and came across discussions about zenoss and zabbix and thought I would check zabbix out. But this seems to fit a specialized group of people/hardware? I cannot find any flat out install, only source code (I assume). I cannot find any mention of anyone running (installing) this on windows.. it all seems to be linux (except for the agent). So am I right in assuming one must know how to compile programs to create their own setup.exe and have a linux server available to be able to use this? I did find three executables in the download (agentd.exe, get.exe, and sender.exe) but of course as you know, these are not installs

    Thanks,
    Robb

You are correct in that the Zabbix server only runs on Linux/Unix. However compiling it isn't as daunting as you may think. Yes this is a little above the average skill of your first time Linux user but if you keep asking questions in the manner you are asking them now I don't think you'll have much trouble with people pointing you in the right direction.

There are some install packages available for Ubuntu I think and I have seen an RPM or two around for OpenSuSE and CentOS.

As for Zabbix vs Zenoss... One of my coworkers used to work for Zenoss and we give each other friendly grief. He says something to the effect of "There can be only one Open Source Monitoring solutin starting with Z!" And I can't agree with him more because that program is Zabbix! And if I'm not mistaken Zabbix was here first. ;-)

      Virtual Appliance

      Hi Rburn,

there ist a complete, pre installed Zabbix Server virtual machine based on OpenSUSE Linux, Apache and MySQL
      available on the download page.

I haven't tried it, but that looks like the easiest way to get it "running on Windows" to have a closer look. Just put it in your VMware Server, if you have one, or install the free VMware Player.
If you decide you like it - which you probaly will - , you can still set up a dedicated linux machine for it. The virtual Appliance is probably suitable only for smaller networks, but that depends on what you want to monitor.

      Have fun,
      Jerry
