Zabbix knowing when internet connection goes down

Firstly, thanks to the Zabbix developers for making such a great piece of software.

I'm using Zabbix to monitor a range of different servers. The servers are off site at a hosting facility, but the Zabbix server is in the company office.

Currently, if the internet connection in the office goes down, the Zabbix server thinks that all of the off site servers have gone down. Would it be possible to make the Zabbix server aware of the status of the internet connection, so that it only notifies us if the connection is up and a server goes down?

I tried to use the 'dependency' feature on a trigger, however there doesn't appear to be a way to tie the dependency to the monitoring of, say, a website (that would indicate that the internet was up). I figure this must be something that's easy to do, so maybe I've missed something?

Any help would be very much appreciated.

I would try monitoring the router on the other side of you internet connection.

Unfortunately the office router is reasonably basic as we're a small company, so I'm not sure that would be possible.

Is it not possible to monitor something remotely and use that as a basis for whether or not the internet connection is up or down?

Do a traceroute to some site on the internet. See what the IP address of the hop after your router is and create a host using this IP.

All you need do it ping it. (Simple check - icmpping)

Just curious - what is "meant by notify us"......

If you mean that you want an action to be taken ONLY if the servers are down and internet is not down, then you can use trigger dependencies.
