How do I know what version the server is

I first downloaded the vmdk and noticed that with the VMDK 1.8.3 I found it was really cool how if you had a problem it would display and error on the webpage and also play a sound. I wanted to install this on my on own Linux server so I went this route

I'm using ubuntu 10.4 and downloaded and installed 1.8.1 server/agent/frountend. One of the first things I noticed that the pop up error alert boxes wasn't happening and relised I was on 1.8.1 and not .3 so I download the last bin files and upgraded to 1.8.3 as per this post

Now the alert boxes still unshowning so I'm wondering is the engine really upgraded, the make install all seemed to work fine but how can I be sure that the Server engine is now 1.8.3 (not fountend) and not still 1.8.1?

Also by defalut should the alert pop boxes happen on the dashboard by defalut or do I need to configure something?

All new to this and linux hence the newbe questions.
