Monitoring pushed messages from hosts to server

We have an environment consisting of many hosts/nodes that are not directly reachable by the server running Zabbix. Given that the only way of communication is having the nodes create text files (similar to log files) on the server (identified by a specific directory or filename for each node), is there a reasonable way of monitoring these messages by the Zabbix server?

As far as I understood Zabbix prefers to pull information from the nodes by the server itself or having the agents push information to the server, but we are - at this time - restricted to just creating text files on the server without directly involving Zabbix.

Any suggestions for a solution or workaround would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Google SEC (Simple Event Correlator). You can use it to tail text files and use zabbix_sender to send information based on what is found to any reachable Zabbix server.

We use this to great effect from watching for entries in log files to other similar things.

Thanks a lot, untergeek! The mentioning of zabbix_sender was really helpful in my context, because the documentation was no help in measuring its value...
