    Template Building

Hi - quite new to Zabbix, coming from a Xymon / Devmon environment and I am looking at what Zabbix can do for me.

One thing I am struggling to get my head around though is Templates. I was testing the monitoring on a Cisco 7206 router, and downloaded a template from the wiki - but it was not complete. i.e - No VLAN support and it seems to be confused about the interfaces.

So I am trying to look at how the process of building templates works. I came across the script that accepts that the output of snmpwalk, but that did not seem to give me anything more than the icmp check.

I also have some devices that I do not have MIB files for, so that will also pose an interesting challenge!

Some pointers / docs / advice would be appreciated

I suggest to use snmpwalk from the commandline and look for the information yourself (yes, this will take a lot of effort).

You can also find a variety of MIB-browsers on the internet which can help you with this...

Wow. Do us all a favour and drop the snippy comments about effort. If you do not want to be of any benefit or assistance - rather say nothing.

What I am looking for is info on how the XML in the templates should be constructed. There is nothing in the documentation regarding this.

As for the search on the Internet... pure genius. I had never thought of that before. Do me a favour though when you find the (broken) MIB info for Nortel DOM cards on the interwebz ... please let me know.

        Hi Bonobo,

I'm just trying to help you, don't worry, if you don't like this, I will stop doing so and I really don't mind!

I'm just telling you how most people deal with your question, based on my personal experience with big implementations. Ontopic, I found a lot of MIB information on the Cisco website, following this link.

Furthermore, it would really help to mention more specific data on your Nortel equipment. There might be people around here which had the same issues as you're experiencing right now.

Please keep in mind, that every single person replying to your questions is doing this to help you. Your unfriendliness appears strange to me in this situation.

Feel free to reply with more information/questions

OK - I actually feel very small about my response now and appreciate your offer to extend an olive branch. Too much emotion and not enough caffeine when I replied.

My issue is that I am interrogating some EV-DO DOM cards via snmp and the only information about what they are is called 'airvana-ran'. In Xymon, I managed to construct a template and match the OIDs to some kind of useful/meaningful data - the rest - I have no idea what it is for or what it represents. EG :

          ifName : .1.3.6.1.2.1.31.1.1.1.1 : branch
          ifBps : .1.3.6.1.2.1.2.2.1.5 : branch
          ifInOctets : .1.3.6.1.2.1.2.2.1.10 : branch
          ifOutOctets : .1.3.6.1.2.1.2.2.1.16 : branch

For me just now having this information will show me the traffic through the E1 links - is all I need to know. It was a total hack getting it to work with Xymon, but we managed to get the interface info on the cards and graph the throughput.

I was just wondering where is the best place to read when going about creating templates. I am not sure what all the XML tags represent etc...

Maybe an open door, but did you already try something like:

            snmpwalk -v 1 -c public <target> | grep Descr

Most of the times, this is the way to get me started finding the descriptions and the correct OID/MIB values...
