    Problems with ICMP Ping Key

    Hello, everyone.

    Because I newbie in Linux and Zabbix world, I have some issues with ICMP Ping configuration for Zabbix server.

    In my case I want to do Ping Checks to ouside world to test if the our company's internet connection is working as it should. But I can not get it working as I thougth.

    When I do the configuration, I get in Zabbix Web interface "Not Supported"

    Zabbix user have got excution rights for FPING.

    My system: centos 5.3, x64. Zabbix server 1.8.3. stable.

    And this check is configured to do on the Zabbix server host.

    See attached image below. Maybe I'm configured something wrong?

        Hi,

        You have these icmpping arguments:
        • target : 149.158.127.18
        • packets : 10
        • interval : 10
        • size : 10
        • timeout : 64

        Are you sure that these values are OK ?
        Zabbix uses fping.
        According to fping doc, minimum packet size should be 12 you are asking for 10.

        regards,
        Alixen

            I'd suggest to start with default values:
            Code:
            icmpping[149.158.127.18]
            or even
            Code:
            icmpping
            if 149.158.127.18 is the IP address of the host you want to check.

            Is it the first time you use icmpping ?
            If yes, have you installed fping command ?
            Have you correctly configured zabbix server to use it (check FpingLocation)?
            Have you checked zabbix-server.log ?

            Regards,

                Did you try icmpping with default values ?

                Problems with icmpping are a recurring question on this forum.
                They generally have to 2 reasons:
                1. Zabbix cannot run fping command (hence my questions about first use)
                2. fping called with wrong arguments (my suggestion to remove non default values)

                Have you tried to raise zabbix server DebugLevel parameter ?
                I'd suggest to
                • set DebugLevel=4
                • restart zabbix server
                • set item Status to Active
                • check zabbix-server.log

                You should see something about your item.

                    I'm not an expert at all....but here is what I did.

                    Created a new Template w/ 2 items. A Ping Check, and a Response Time Check. Then I applied that template to the devices I wanted to monitor.

                    What I found by searching the forums for a while was that you should use these 2 keys with the included spaces between each comma:

                    icmpping[, , , ,]
                    icmppingsec[, , , , ,]

                      Hi Raymond,

                      Thanks so much for your post it gives me some hope, but it doesn't work with me....

                      I have Zabbix 1.8.4 installed on a Fedora Core 13.

                      Here is some log from zabbix_server.log

                      17872:20110205:003736.493 In substitute_simple_macros() data:'icmpping[, , , ,]'
                      17872:20110205:003736.494 In add_icmpping_item() addr:'10.8.0.186' count:3 interval:0 size:0 timeout:0
                      17872:20110205:003736.494 End of add_icmpping_item()
                      17855:20110205:003742.834 In zbx_strpool_release() str:'icmpping[, , , ,]'
                      17855:20110205:003742.835 In zbx_strpool_release() str:'icmpping[, , , ,]
                      fping looks like ok, but I don't find anything in the log that can confirm that.

                      Anyway the result is the same : 0

                      What I would like is a track to follow , just to have some clue on my problem and solve it...

                      Please help before I'm going crazy to just have a single ping :/

                      See you

                        Please check if the fping has got the rigth ownerships for zabbix user.

                        For me it was the solution of the problem.

                          Here it is the fping right :

                          -rws--s---. 1 root zabbix 24328 25 juil. 2009 /usr/sbin/fping

                          Is it correct ?
