Maybe some internal item? Like zabbix[queue].

not really - search jira for existing feature requests, if none found, add it as a new one please -
As I see on the "create item--> zabbix_internal type" there's one called zabbix[queue] to check the queue...
Is it what you want?Number of hosts 1600,Number of items +90k,Number of triggers +22k, Number of users +100, New values per second +1270

Right - i am using the same, created additional template linked with Zabbix server. In my case these are "Zabbix queue" item details:
Description: Zabbix queue
Type: Zabbix internal
Key: zabbix[queue]
Type of information: Numeric (unsigned)
Data type: Decimal
Update interval (in sec) : 60
Works perfectly
