I downloaded the live CD, thinking it would be a quick way to give Zabbix a test drive. But it dumps me out at a shell login prompt, with no hint whatsoever what to do next. I haven't been able to find any help on the website or elsewhere. Can someone point me toward a quick start guide, or give me a few hints? Thanks.

if it was able to get the ip address over dhcp, you should just navigate to that address, and you should be able to access the zabbix frontend -
It doesn't activate the wireless hardware, so I don't think it has an IP address. Even if it did, navigate with what -- Lynx? Does Zabbix have a text mode front end? In the screen shots it looks like a GUI to me.Comment

ahh. well, first - yeah, i guess wireless won't work. second, zabbix appliance provides server part only and is intended to be "looked at" by a browser from another system.
i can see the benefit from having a fully loaded livecd with gui & browser, but that would be an additional effort to create one. lately people seem to use virtual machines much more than live cds

Thanks for the reply, but I guess it leaves me wondering, what exactly does the live CD do? I think most would assume, as I did, that it would let one take a look at the system and see the basics of how it works, and help one decide whether it'll do the job they need to do. But it seems that's not the case.
So how would one go about that? The "Quick Start" in the documentation on the website isn't really any help. I really can't afford to take a week, or even a day, to figure it out and make it work before I even know if it's going to help me.Comment

it is - it is a full zabbix server that is started up and just works. but it does not include "user" part - system with the browser that user would use.
as i said, i can sort of see the benefit of creating such a system as well, although maybe not a huge one with everybody being into virtualisation nowadays...Comment

OK... So what do you actually *DO* with the live CD? Do you boot it on a box with a wired connection to the network, then go to another machine and point a browser at it?
All I want to do is see Zabbix work, in some sort of basic form, before I invest a lot of time. Will the live CD help me do that? If so, how? If not, how can I do it?Comment

yep
if you have access to any kind of virtualisation, you can try one of those appliance optionsComment
