    Agent documentation

    hi everybody,
this is my first post in this forum as I'm definitely new with this product. in the past I've always worked with IBM Tivoli Monitoring products and I've seen a litle of Nagios, so be patient with me
    my company asked me to look for a monitoring tool to install and use to monitor our server farm and I've been suggested to use Zabbix;
so, these days I've been a little around to understand how it works and whether it is the right tool for us...
from my experience I think it is ok but I would like to understand a little more about agents but I haven't find any book concerning them.
can someone help me and say where I can find informations on agents?

of course I'm not speaking about specific precompiled agent, what I'd really like to understand is how a generic agent is and how it works.

thanks in advance for your help,
    fabio

    Hi Fabio,

    First of all, welcome!

The agent is just a daemon or service running on a client server that collects the data that the Zabbix server uses to monitor your environment.

    Please see
    http://www.zabbix.com/documentation/...ndalone_daemon
    and
    http://www.zabbix.com/documentation/...g#zabbix_agent
    on agent usage.

Besides agents, Zabbix can query IPMI and SNMP devices, ping, connect to tcp/udp ports and do webmonitoring.
You can also send traps to Zabbix via the zabbix_sender utility.
Actually, there are even more options you can use. They are all noted in the manual.

Good luck with your investigation into Zabbix, I hope we will soon gain another user in the community!
    With kind regards,

    Raymond
