    Email Settings

    Hello everyone!

I have successfully installed the zabbix and able to monitor the clients.

Please tell me how to configure it for getting emails for the various triggers.
I want, zabbix server should send me mail by its own for the few triggers.
    How to do that ??..

Should i have to configure send mail server or is there anyother way ??...

Thanks in anticipation of your valuable reply.

The forums are here to help you, but the answers to these questions are amply documented in the manual. Please check it out first: http://www.zabbix.com/documentation/1.8/manual

You could start by telling us what you've tried, and what settings you have for your email media type. Email is a tricky thing. Zabbix doesn't send the emails, it sends them to an SMTP server (which hopefully sends the emails).

Does the Audit page in the UI show attempts to send that failed, no attempts, something else?

              Email Settings

I followed link suggested by you which is of manual of Zabbix.

After installing Zabbix Server on one local machine i install zabbix agent on one another machine.

Then did the following on Zabbix Server :--

Firstly i created one New User by the Name of AmanNew with following options

              User type Zabbix user
              Groups Network Administrator

              Language English
              Theme System Default
              Auto-login Disable
              Auto-logout (min 90 seconds) Disable
              Refresh (in seconds) 30
              Rows per page 50

After that i added Media with following options

              Type Email
Send to [email protected] (192.168.1.242 is our local mail server)
              When active 1-7,00:00-23:59
              Use if severity warning,High,Disaster
              Status enabled

              Then i SAVE the configration.

Then i set read only permission for this user

After this is did email setting as follows:-

              Description Emai For Triggers
              Type Ez Texting Email
              SMTP server 192.168.1.242
              SMTP helo 192.168.1.242
              SMTP email [email protected]

In this zabbix.server is the hostname.domainname of Zabbix Server having IP 192.168.1.240 and i did not configure any mail server on 192.168.1.240 as i am having 192.168.1.242 as our local mail server.

Then i add action for New User i.e.AmanNew without setting any condition for action and then Save the configration.

Please verify the above configration and please you tell me what should i do deliberatly so that i can get mail.

                Aman,

                a few things.

First off your mail settings are not correct. It may work but this is not a valid way of working.

                Type Email
Send to [email protected] (192.168.1.242 is our local mail server)
A descent mail server will not accept this. use your email address that you are using on your mail server [email protected] or something.

                Description Email For Triggers
                Type Email
                SMTP server 192.168.1.242
                SMTP helo 192.168.1.242
                SMTP email [email protected]
Your HELO is incorrect, again a descent mailserver would close your connection instantly. You are identifying as the server you are connecting to which is wrong and a sign of abuse normally. Use your zabbix server ip or better its FQDN.

Then try to force a trigger to fire. After that go to "Monitoring > Events"

Your event should apear there with in the last colomn a number or error under 'Actions'. If there is only a "-" under the 'Action' column then no action is defined for the event happening. If its a green number then the mail has been sent.

If not you click on the time and look what the error message is and try to resolve it.

There is more written in my reply then only to change the smtp helo. Did you follow it all and if so, we need information on what the results are.

                      Thanks Bennie...

Firstly I would like to say thanks to you as i am able to receive emails within my local network using my local mail server.

But now i want to get email on one global mail id i.e. my gmail id.

For this i change the email id of the user to global id i.e. my gmail id and i did changes in the following enteries only:-

                      SMTP Server gmail.com
SMTP helo hostname of Zabbix Server

But i am not able to get the mails on my gmail id.
So please can you tell me where is the problem.
Do i have to change any other entry ??...

Nice to see you got it working.

If you actually want to use gmail smtp servers then you are required to authenticate yourself, use ssl and other ports. There are some discussions on the forum about this already, try to search for gmail or google smtp.

If your local SMTP server is able to mail to 'the world' then i would suggest to use that server as a relay and configure your gmail address as email for receiving notifications.

The internal Zabbix email media type cannot do TLS or any other SSL authentication, ergo it cannot connect directly to gmail's SMTP server.

If you were to create a separate, script-based media type to do the negotiation then it would be possible. I don't have any such script now, as we have our own SMTP server that does all of the sending.

Apologies in advance if this sounds argumentative, it is not intended that way. I read the blanket statement that google mail servers require TLS and authentication a few times. However that is only the case if you use a gmail <From domain>, or a domain hosted on google apps. If the <From domain> is not gmail, or hosted on google apps, you are able to hand of email for a gmail account without TLS or authentication. For example the trailing telnet crafted email was happily delivered to my gmail account.

Having said that I would agree this is probably only useful in corner cases and depending on your setup incurs a reasonable risk of ending up in the google spam filters. A local mail server, or JBo's generously contributed gmail howto, would be the better solution for a production setup.
