Trigger for Items Belonging to Multiple Hosts

I'm interested in creating a trigger based on the ratio of two items, however, the items are not associated with the same host.

I've tried doing this via the GUI and via XML import but the system errors out with a message stating that it's unable to find one of the items (the item not associated with the host that I'm creating the trigger under).

Is what I'm trying to do possible within the functionality of the system as-is?

Calculated items are what you're looking for.

It allows you to compute formulas of a varying degree of difficulty to fit your needs.
Eg. for a ratio formula between items from different hosts:

0.4*avg("Zabbix Server:zabbix[wcache,values]",600) + 0.6*avg("remote_host:zabbix[wcache,values]",600)
