HELP: User Parameters, Keys

Hey guys, I'm Hernandez, first time poster here.


I need help. I'm a Zabbix total noob and I need someone to explain me some things:

Keys: As I see it, there are only names to identify the User Parameter, right?

User Parameters: As I see it, these are the commands Zabbix executes to check for information, right?

Now, on these two subjects, I need some kind of document that explains to me (in detail) how to create custom user parameters.

I'm using this to help me on my way but the only info I can find on this subject seems to be directed to users with some experience on the subject.


Secondly:

I need to know how reliable Zabbix is to monitor workstations. I intend to use it to monitor aprox. 20 workstations, 3 servers and about 15 virtual machines. I need to know if it's actually worth it to monitor the workstations, or if it will give me some major headaches configuring Zabbix for them.


I'm sorry if I'm asking for too much but I really need this info. My life depends on it.

the "key" is the unique (per host) identifier of values you collect.
for zabbix agent type of items, the keys can mean an internal zabbix agent value, or as you mention a userparameter.

a userparameter is just a command that is run by the agent. it should return one value

as for your life depending on monitoring workstations, I would suggest changing job ASAP ...

for monitoring your workstations, you'll have to spend some time fine tunig a template, that you can apply to all...

I'm a beginner and I had problems too with userparameters. This manual helped me solve it: zabbix manual (works fine with zabbix 1.8)
Go to page 119, it's quite well explained. Good luck!
