monitoring udp ports (services)

hi all again!!
i googled and found this old thread http://www.zabbix.com/forum/showthread.php?t=5666 about monitoring udp ports. i wonder if with newer versions of zabbix it is possible to do it in a simple way, with simple check it seems impossible.
as i see (i use SNMP, not zabbix_agent, for most of my monitoring) i will need to make a Server side script or a wrapper around fping as "James Wales" said.
any suggestions ???

I would like to know if there is a simpler way to monitor UDP traffic too, as in the in/out flow. I'm a novice at zabbix, so any help in this is much appreciated
