    Auto registration of zabbix agents

I can't find anything in the Zabbix documentation about auto registration.

The "What's New" section of the 1.8 manual says this:

4.2.2 Auto registration for active agents

Completely new in Zabbix 1.8, it is possible to allow active Zabbix agent auto-registration, after which server can start monitoring them. This allows to add new hosts for monitoring without any manual server configuration for each individual host.

The feature might be very handy for automatic monitoring of new Cloud nodes. As soon as you have a new node in the Cloud Zabbix will automatically start collection of performance and availability data of the host.

... however there is nothing anywhere else in the manual as to how to set up auto registration of agents. Does anyone have any clues on how to do this?

Thanks, but that document talks about network discovery, not auto registration.

What I was after was "active Zabbix agent auto-registration" -- i.e. create an agent, point it at the zabbix server (assume that's done by an entry in the zabbix_agent.conf file) and have the server automatically register that agent and begin monitoring it.

I thought that discovery was needed, but it seems you "just" need to defind an action on the Event Source=Auto registration (under config->actions).

        http://www.zabbix.com/documentation/...config/actions
"Auto registration - events generated by new active agents"

Thanks for helping me to understand this better - was just about to play with it.

I added this to the zabbix wiki, here:

          http://www.zabbix.com/wiki/howto/config/autoregister

I still have a question, which I've listed on the wiki page -- should there be different conditions for registering different types of agent? e.g. I want to check the OS type on the registered client and add the client to different templates depending on what I see (much like the way network discovery works).

That is documented in the auto-discovery section of the manual - se my fist post. See 11.5 - Real life scenario.

No, it doesn't work quite the same in Auto registration as it does in Discovery.

If I go to Configuration -> Actions, select the event source Discovery, click Create Action, and go to the Conditions tab I have a range of conditions that I can apply checks on -- Host IP, Received Value, Discovery status, etc.

If I select the event source Auto registration and create an event then the only conditions I have available are Host name and proxy.

Come to think of it that is quite a problem, I might submit it as an enhancement request.

Yes - I see it now - strange with this limitation ...
(Just an idee: maybe you can make some api/script as a workaround - in the action operation)
