Distributed Web Monitoring solutions? (Since can't use proxies)

Does anyone have any good solution for real distributed web monitoring for Zabbix ?

We have servers around the world and need to monitor hundreds of web servers, but global connectivity is too poor to do that from a central location (though we try, with delays, etc.) If Zabbix proxy would do web monitoring, all would be good, but it can't, so we are stuck.

We are thinking of building our own, but it's hard to integrate, especially to get distributed config info without config files on each server, etc. We could try to connect to the proxy DB and drive items there via the sender, etc.

Otherwise would love a distributed smoke-ping that we could run from a central location or something to scale this up and make it work to detect failure quickly, not the 10-20 minutes we have to wait not to avoid hundreds of false alerts each day.

I am very sure it can't do DISTRIBUTED monitoring - all web monitoring is done by the central zabbix server, not by the proxies. A full DM system can do some of this, but that's not what I need. What I need is the proxies to do the web checks, or some other solution that can do that, globally, and deal with network issues, ideally vote on up/down, etc.
