run action if zabbix agent fails

I have a template that use zabbix agent for obtain data of servers, also I added to the same template a check that run a ping, I configured one action to send us mail if a trigger is executed. I detected if the server is down the zabbix agent can't be executed (it is normal). I would like to know if there is some way to configure one action on a template to send us messages when zabbix agent can't be run the items on one server.

Maybe this is not the correct way

Create an log item to see if there unsupported items in the Zabbix log.
And create an trigger to see if you receive data fromn the zabbix_agent.
