Zabbix instalation problems

Hello good day I have problems with the installation of the zabbix 1.8, i have Debian etch with PHP 4, after installing the database and copy the contents of the folder frontends/php into /var/www/zabbix and when i try to acces to route http://myserver/zabbix to complete de instalation I have this message in the browser

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected '&' expecting T_VARIABLE or '$' in /var/www/zabbix/include/func.inic.php on line 498.
