Ping quit working

Running 1.8.8 and randomly pings quit working.

Additionally, items become "Not Supported"

Your item is a generic one still. it needs values or macros.
Go to your linked template and edit that item.
I use [{IPADDRESS},2 , , ,]
That will use the host IP and a count of 2 - the default is 3.

That fixed the ping problem, however I did not do that from the beginning. It worked for a couple of months. Thanks for the answer!

What is the deal with the SNMP items switching between supported and not supported?

Well I'm not using SNMP or IPMI, but typically when something is automatically switched to unsupported it's an item that fails at a basic level.
I've had those too, and for me it was something not working on the active agent configuration. A script error, or missing/bad key in the Userparameter section.
The best thing you can do is change your agent conf Debug=4, re-enabe your item,let it run, then parse through it to see when your SNMP checks run - look for the error.
When it switches to unsupported, it should give you a clue. If you don't see it in the Zabbix logs, check you system logs for SNMP issues.
