Simple monitoring.

Thank you for reading. I've just installed Zabbix and am coming from Simple Ping Monitor. Am I able to do things like I can with Simple Ping Monitor? I'd rather not install the agent on all my hosts but would rather run simple ping monitors as well as to check if my email server (SMTP) is working if coldfusion and webserver are up. Is there a way to do this without the agent? I'm running the latest version on Centos 5.

For example I'm trying to setup a simple Ping monitor. I've searched the forums and was only able to come up with this. http://www.zabbix.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1325 Which is extremely outdated as things have changed. Is there a guide or something as to how I can setup a simple ping monitor?

Short how-to:
- create an host
- link host to Template_standalone template. Template_standalone contains simple checks for ping and www and smtp (and a few more).
- once linked, disable items and triggers you don't need.
