How to retrieve host and group host status?

Hi, this is my first post and my first time using zabbix.. kinda stuck with how will i be able to pull the host status and hostgroup status via the api.. im kinda clueless which of the methods in the api should i use. i want to get those info being displayed on zabbix administration page to my custom php page.

when retrieving a host using the api i had to add teh parameter select_items or select_group from there youll be able to fetch items under that host or group in which that host is under
