looking in the api i cant see anything that will make me pull the user media.. only media types..

it's a known missing feature that should be implemented in the newer zabbix 2.0 and 1.8.14rc: https://support.zabbix.com/browse/ZBX-5032
you can patch the api yourself if you don't want to upgrade:

just in case somebody else stumbles upon this thread later
i believe user media retrieval with user.get did not land in 1.8, it only appeared in 2.0 with the selectMedias parameter.
