Discovery parameter on whether a host is new or existing

We have ~600 hosts already discovered by our 1.8.10 Zabbix server, and it is working fine. Changes to Discovery are reflected on the existing hosts, new hosts are properly detected and assigned to groups and templates are properly applied.

As we build hosts, they become available via ping/agent checks, however their services (web, etc) have not been turned up yet, so they are alarming in Zabbix after being discovered.

Is there a variable that determines whether a host is newly discovered or already existing? Is there a condition we could use to place newly discovered hosts automatically into maintenance (and email/notify someone)?

To detect whether a host has just been discovered or not:

Configuration -> Actions -> (select your action)

Add the following condition to have this action only apply to newly discovered hosts:

Discovery status = "Discovered"
