I want to run zabbix like this.

I have one public server running the zabbix server on it. I have multiple clients all behind their respective firewalls who will send info to that server using zabbix_sender. I don't want zabbix server to even attempt to contact the clients because they are unreachable. How can I do that?

You may take advantage of active checks. ZABBIX agent will connect to the server, get list of active checks and will periodically send required data to the server.

How do tell the server not to attempt to connect to the hosts? In the old version of zabbix you could simply stop the suckerd service while running trapd. That's what I want something like that.

Switch all items to ZABBIX agent(active) and ZABBIX won't connect to the agent anymore.
