low-level discovery - where do items appear?

When using low-level discovery for filesystems, do the new items appear in the template and show up as not supported for other servers, or do they just appear in the host's item list? I know you make the discovery item prototypes in the template, but I don't really want to litter my templates with items that not every server can use.
