Templates for Cisco, Foundry or Juniper devices?

The Host.SNMP template is nice but has a lot of things that aren't necessarily useful for monitoring routers and switches. Am I incorrect in assuming that I will have to dig into the mysql backend to properly create a customized template tailored to Juniper, Cisco and Foundry fundamentals? (i.e. CPU utilization, Memory Utilization, Interfaces Status and Interface Counters)

I'm suprised there is not a collaboration of good templates to use for common devices. Or did I overlook it?

    No, you didn't overlooked it.
It would be nice to have a shared public template repository. So we can all benefit from eachothers template creations which would speed up the zabbix initial configuration.

Alexei, maybe another forum area for templates won't be a bad idea?

      I think so too.

For example, we monitor netscreen and cisco devices too, so we can change knowlegde.

      Nice idea erisan500

          just run on zabbixserver:
          echo "select * from items where hostid=<template-host-id>" | mysql -u<youruser> -p<yourpwd> -h<dbhost> <name of zabbix database> >> tmp.txt

          and put the file here

Now, what is the trick to input a template someone posts into my mysql database?

                A neat trick

Would be to white a script to take the output from snmpwalk and shove it into your zabbix database.

And while I am on the subject of neat tricks, how about a clone template (with or without triggers) button(s) .

A 'copy selected items' to new template button would also be cool.

However, in answer to your questions. A better way to get the items out would be by using mysqldump and pipe it thru grep to sort the items you want to a file . That way you have all of the "insert into" lines already in the file and you can just do a mysql < file.sql to get the data in.....

                  flat file templates

I think templates should be handled as flat files in a zabbix directory where a zabix module would parse any files with the proper header in that directory and feed the database with the appropriate SQL. This is necessary in order support the various other databases, not just MySQL. This also has the benefit of allowing admins to tweak their templates to their desires by hand.. and of course even better would be a template export option from an already monitored host.

totaly agree. right now i am playing around with a cisco 4500 box. an it's absolut a pain, to create 101 items for each interface. alexei, what do you think about that?

Hmmm... I'm think use xml more usefull. See example in attach. I'm write some code for load and save XML. Now i'm write code for export from sql and import to sql. Just wait.

I have found out that if create a host group and add just the host or template that I adding to it. Then I take and create the base items for 1 interface. After that I just open each of those items in a seperate tab on Firefox change then change the number of the interface and instead of clicking save click add to host group. This preserves the original entry and adds the change. Using this method and doing 5 items for each interface I was able to creat a template for a 48 port switch wittin 1/2 an hour.

Unfortunately, this no longer works in Zabbix 1.1.x
