        in debian/ubuntu it works with:

        Code:
        apt-get install update-notifier-common
        /usr/lib/update-notifier/apt-check --human-readable
after this you can use grep and awk to finish the output..

        the same on centos/RHEL
        Code:
        yum --security check-update

there is a package named "apt-show-versions" in ubuntu that gives the better result, even with the name of the packages.
