Forgive my n00bness, is there a way to perminently install the appliance into a VM? I downloaded the ISO, but everytime it just runs the live version. Is there a way to perminantly install the appliance into the VM I created?

I've not used the ISO, but I'm pretty sure there isn't a way to install from it. It's simply there to provide a quick test environment for Zabbix. Since you mentioned you wanted it running in a VM, you could always just download the VMware/VirtualBox appliance at http://www.zabbix.com/download.php instead of the ISO.
If you truly want to do it all on your own though, you'll need to install an OS and then install Zabbix on it manually (whether from source or from whatever package management system on your OS of choice).
