Zabbix Appliance or manual installation

Hi,

We are about to use zabbix for monitoring a small environment (30-40 servers max).
Our linux knowledge is limited.
Is it better to use the appliance or a manual installation?(Think of future updates)
If we use the appliance, can we backup and restore the mysql db to newer version of the appliance.
Any advice would be much appreciated.

it is easy to install zabbix from scratch!!

i think the Appliance is only for test-installations or to test zabbix ..

Building Zabbix is very easy, updates are easy too (just rebuild and install). You don't really need to be a Linux expert for that.

If your Linux knowledge is limited, I think you would be better off using packages that are provided by someone else. For example, if you're using Centos or RHEL, zabbix 2.x packages are available in the EPEL repo. Someone else maintains the packages, you just need to periodically update them.

Zabbix is easy to install from source, but using packages is often a better answer.
