Best method for monitoring a host's responsiveness

I'm looking for the recommended/suggested way to monitor a (linux) server for responsiveness. We just had a server hang for about 5 minutes before realizing there was a problem.

How should this type of situation be monitored?

Thank you for the reply, but I wanted something more reliable. I'm going to create one with agent.ping & nodata()
