    New to Zabbix-Help with start

    Dear All,

sorry for the most probably dumb topic, I am new to Zabbix, new to IT overall, and totally unfimilar with Linux..
I "installed" the appliance on esxi, configured static IP,dns.
Frontend looks good tried to read threads and documentation on how to go on from here, but didn't look too easy/helpful, mostly because people who install and configure Zabbix know what they do..at least a bit
So now how to go on? we have a DC on w2k3,exch 2k3,wsus and 2 xenapps.
I'd like to have basic monitoring (ping, disk, cpu, memory and alert if it gets ... for ... time), and a couple of services (exchange service, ica)
Found the agent for windows, installed on a machine as a service (just an xp test machine) configuration file only has :logfile, server, hostname without #,server is the zabbix server IP, hostname is the xp machine dns name.
On zabbix I created a host, named it, used the IP address of the xp machine, and selected it's Agent interface for it's production IP.Set status to monitored.Created an item, for testing the "agent.ping" key. (created a 2nd with the "icmpping" leaving all options default)after about 15-20 minutes I got the green "Z" next to it, which would be a good sign.
Turned off the machine, but still everything is green...
So I clearly have something wrong
Could someone explain in "plain English" (sorry, it's not my 1st language) how to get something monitored from scratch?
thanks, and sorry for the long story..

    You are welcome)

What name do you set in zabbix web frontend for this host?
Is it as the same how in zabbix_agentd.conf?

      Hi,

yes, the same hostname is set.
it's also the same in the DNS.

a new thing is that I see now the red "Z". but in the defined items I see all green (just tested with agent.ping , service_state[TlntSvr] to check telnet service, and icmpping[<target>,<packets>,<interval>,<size>,<timeout>] (the icmpping most likely is not good I haven't configured any target ,packet, interval here, just selected the dropdown itemfrom the Simple check Types)

What do you have in Monitoring -> Lastest data for your host?

Did you link some template for you host?

If it possible attach screenshot all Lastest data for your host.

          thanks for the help.
          uploading the screenshots.
I see a couple of thing that can be wrong somehow...
1: telnet to the client immediately closes.
2: values for the items (6 for the telnet service) doesn't say too much..what is 6
          Attached Files

Firewall is open for 10050 port?
If you had green Z, then it's all right.
            Zabbix_agent is started?

            - Try zabbix_get -s x.x.x.x -k system.cpu.load[,avg1]
            - Also try telnet X.X.X.X
            - For windows host you can link Template OS Windows

              thanks,
I don't have zabbix_get on the client machine installed.
              will do that.
the local firewall for the XP machine is off (disabled service)
              telnet:
              telnet 10.52.0.151
              Trying 10.52.0.151...
telnet: connect to address 10.52.0.151: Connection refused
              the agent is started.
assigned the WIndows OS template to it, it added couple of stuff, thanks for that.
now I turned off the machine to test. The green "Z" turned to red after a minute or 2, but now that seems to be the only indicator. can't see anything else "red", just the "Z".where should I look?

If you assigned Windows OS Template

You should see on Monitoring -> Dashboard that your host down or unreachable.

thanks, it needed some time apparently until it showed up.
however, the only thing it reports is that the agent is not running for 5 minutes.
Shouldn't it report also that the ping doesn't work, and all other items that it cannot check?
would also be interested in how to create an item to monitor a service (like ICA Service, or Telnet which I tried..but seems not working.

thanks again, really appreciate all the help !!
