We use a Template for the Host with it's IP manually assigned to a variable in the Template Macros. We assign this Template to a Guest so that we know it's Host IP. What is the best way we can automate this so that when we move a Guest to another Host it will automatically update it's Host Template/Host IP?

Just for information, monitoring of VMWare infrastructure is coming in Zabbix 2.2. It will support handling of guests migrated from one hypervisor to another.

Do we know what the timescales are for that functionality? / 2.2 release?

It is already available for early preview in 2.1.4 (alpha) and will be part of Zabbix 2.2 stable.
