Value map

Can anybody tell me how to use value map ? Also how we can check the host availability using triggers?
Interested to know about zabbix_suckered , I didn't find any command like this after my installation . If anybody have patience to tell what this is for will be good for me. Pls help

Value mapping and maps

Ditto on this question. Does this feature do anything? I've tried many options and my values just aren't changing.

Can someone provide an example?

I've read it about 3 times now because it sounds like I should get it after reading it, but I don't.

What part of zabbix are these mappings for? May be they are very specific to a feature I don't use.

Very briefly:

'0', '1' makes absolutely no sense for items like "FTP server is running". Value mappings fix this by defining a mapping between integer values and their human-readable representation.

So, as soon as you define new mapping, say, "Status of services" as:

'0' => Down
'1' => Up

and link it to the item "FTP server is running".

Value mapping works for items having value type "Unsigned integer" only!

I see now. The 64 bit (bigint-20) integer for the item, and the value mapping field appears.

I now see that you apply value mappings to items. I think that was the most confusing part to me.
